The Scene Gizmo

The Scene Gizmo

The Scene Gizmo is an axis-based navigation aid for the Digital Twin Viewer and Editor, conveniently docked at the bottom center of each window.

This intuitive tool enhances spatial control by allowing users to instantly align their view to any primary axis (X, Y, or Z) with a simple click on the corresponding arm of the gizmo, or change their view mode from Perspective to Orthographic and back by clicking on the label below.

In addition, Select, Move, and Rotate tools can be found as icons along the left-hand side of the gizmo for easy accessibility. Associated hotkeys also allow for alternative selection methods to improve workflow efficiency for seasoned users.

Understanding View Modes:

Perspective View: This mode mimics how we see the world in real life. Objects will appear smaller as they get further away, creating a sense of depth. Perspective view is ideal for immersive scene exploration and realistic visualizations, and is recommended as the default view.

Orthographic View: In this mode, all objects are shown at the same scale regardless of distance. This removes depth distortion, making it perfect for technical tasks when manipulating the scene. However, it can make scenes feel flat or unnatural if used unintentionally. For this reason, Orthographic view is recommended primarily for content creators or users who need to view the scene as if it were a mechanical or architectural drawing.

Key Features:
  1. Axis Alignment Control: Click any axis arm to snap the camera view to that direction for precise scene orientation.
  2. View Mode Toggle: Use the label beneath the gizmo to switch between Perspective and Orthographic views.
  3. Tool Integration: Select, Move, and Rotate tools are now docked beside the gizmo for quick access, with hotkeys still supported.

Why it matters:

The Scene Gizmo streamlines navigation and improves spatial awareness, making it easier to inspect, edit, and present your digital twin scenes with precision.
